Graduate Profile: Lee Tan, Founder of Well+Being
Meet Lee Tan, Pharmacist, PREKURE Master Health Coach, and founder of Well+Being, Dunedin’s award-winning urban wellness centre.
Thirty years in pharmacy, and a moment that changed everything
Lee has been a registered Pharmacist for more than 30 years, and for much of that time she was a shareholder in two busy pharmacies in central Dunedin. She was good at it, respected, and deeply committed to her community. Then the pandemic arrived.
What Lee witnessed during that period stayed with her. The desperation in people’s faces. And something else, something she describes as a power imbalance that she found deeply uncomfortable. As a healthcare worker, she held enormous influence over people’s lives, deciding who got the last COVID jab or the last box of oestrogen patches. She did not like that feeling. It sat at odds with everything she believed about what good healthcare should look like.
At the same time, her own family was navigating serious health challenges, including dementia, diabetes, and eating disorders. The combination of what she was seeing at work and what she was living at home pushed her toward a different kind of practice, one built on empowerment rather than prescription.
Falling into health coaching, and taking it seriously
Lee started her PREKURE training in 2021, straight after the pandemic, and became a Master Health Coach in early 2024. She describes taking the health coaching philosophy completely to heart. The principle of meeting people where they are resonated deeply, and it shaped every decision she made about how to bring that philosophy into the world.
Her conclusion was that society was not yet ready to walk into a health coaching clinic. So she built something they would walk into anyway. Something, as she puts it, really sexy and stunning. A space so compelling and beautiful that people would come for the experience and stay for the transformation.
Well+Being: redefining what it means to be well
In founding Well+Being, Lee created far more than a wellness clinic. Spanning three sub-floors in central Dunedin, the centre brings together health coaching, spa and body therapies, reformer Pilates, infrared sauna, float therapy, contrast therapy, and LED red light recovery, all grounded in the five pillars of lifestyle medicine: Movement, Nutrition, Sleep, Mindfulness, and Community.
Two years on, Lee is running one-on-one client sessions, workshops with other PREKURE coaches, and community events designed to get people talking about health in an accessible, non-clinical way. She also co-hosts a podcast with a fellow mental health coach and nurse, planting seeds about health through everyday conversation.
In 2024, Well+Being was recognised as Winner of Best Urban Wellness Centre and Runner Up for Best Holistic Health Spa at the Asia Pacific Spa and Wellness Awards, a testament to what Lee and her team have built.
A purpose fully aligned
Lee talks about the Japanese concept of ikigai, the intersection of what you love, what you are good at, what you get paid for, and what the world needs right now. She believes that is exactly where she is. It has not been an easy journey, she is clear about that. But it has been completely worthwhile.
