Susan Harbers left the corporate world to begin her career in health and wellbeing. In the middle of Melbourne lockdown, she is launching her new health coaching business.

How did you originally become interested in health and lifestyle medicine?

From a young age, I was always encouraged to get involved in team sports and to see exercise as a part of everyday life. I didn’t pay too much attention to nutrition until my teen years, when I became a vegetarian. This sparked my interest in seeking a holistic lifestyle, based around nutritious food, exercise, social connections and growth through learning.

Being a mum to two boys – now young men – emphasised the importance of good nutrition and a wholesome lifestyle. I have always been a supporter of preventative medicine, and my sons now continue to seek out integrative medicine practitioners. My interest in food has become central to my family and those around me – I love to have people over and do a big cook-up and see how food and connection can bring such happiness.

I now feel better equipped to turn this passion into a rewarding career.

I am constantly studying, taking any opportunity to learn more and to expand my understanding of nutrition and lifestyle medicine. I don’t think that will ever stop. More recently, I have moved away from corporate life and transitioned fully into health and wellbeing, and the change feels right! Especially now that I have become a Certified Health Coach. Those around me are so supportive too, as they know my passion.

How has becoming a PreKure Certified Health Coach impacted your life?

It has reinforced how passionate I am about health and wellbeing and I now feel better equipped to turn this passion into a rewarding career. The journey has allowed me to focus my energies on my own health to ensure that I am equipped to motivate others. It has broadened my thinking around health and how to walk with others on their own health journeys.

The pandemic has highlighted the need for us all to question and assess our lifestyle – a great opportunity for health coaches.

Would you like to share any client success stories or a big ‘aha’ moment in your coaching career?

Trying to set up a new business during a global pandemic has brought out a lot of ahhharggg moments! Melbourne’s lockdown has been a ‘challenge’. It has forced me to think more creatively on how I can make connections and find opportunities to promote my services. I have had to step out of my comfort zone and become active on social media and explore all the different services that would benefit from having a health coach in their practice. The pandemic has highlighted the need for us all to question and assess our lifestyle – a great opportunity for health coaches to be available to provide support and motivation. I just need to remember what day it is and to brush my hair before connecting on Zoom!
