Magali Steffens is a PreKure Certified Health Coach, specialising in Multiple Sclerosis, autoimmunity and brain health. Magali’s life took a sudden turn when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and she decided to learn everything she could about the condition. She felt empowered with all her new knowledge and, being a giver, wanted to share this power with others. That’s how she found Health Coaching.

By Magali Steffens

I have always been dedicated to supporting others and learning what they need to help them grow as a person or in their career. After 10 years of teaching, managing artists and creating cultural events, my life took a new direction when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

More energised than ever, I am convinced that lifestyle and stress management is the only sustainable way to overcome autoimmune diseases and protect our brains.

Stubborn, I did not accept the idea of passively waiting for a cure. I dived into books and studies, learnt all that I could about autoimmunity and brain health, tested it all on myself and fell in love with my own condition. More energised than ever, I am convinced that lifestyle and stress management is the only sustainable way to overcome autoimmune diseases and protect our brains.

Eat – Move – Sleep – Engage are the four pillars of health around which I am working in my coaching practice. I believe in all life learning, having fun and being creative whatever the challenge is.

How did you originally become interested in health and lifestyle medicine?

I have always been passionate about people’s wellbeing and happiness, which brought me to the path of working in the creative field. Education and learning have also always been a big priority for me, as part of looking after our brain health, being aware of this through family and close ones, living with dementia or other neurological conditions. Finally, with my cultural and family background (French with Spanish origins), food has always been at the centre of my life, as part of quality nutrition and quality time.

But I guess, we all have a personal story and a personal health journey. My own diagnosis made me realise how much I have been ignoring many symptoms (depression, stress, fatigue, regular insomnia, weird pain and numbness, infertility) and unknowingly harming myself.

I felt empowered and, being a giver, I needed to share this and give this power to others. That is how I found Health Coaching and PreKure.

I was looking for answers and understanding. I also started to look at the bigger picture – my family health history, my husband’s ADD and his family history, my friends’ journey. It all made sense and I finally put it all together: creativity, education, nutrition, connection with others, mindfulness, exercise… I felt empowered and, being a giver, I needed to share this and give this power to others. That is how I found Health Coaching and PreKure.

I now use Health Coaching in two ways – one-on-one coaching, and education through talks, workshops, and my Facebook page. My main message being to help others listen their own body and mind.

Why autoimmunity and brain health?

I like to say that Multiple Sclerosis is the perfect combination of both. The more I have learnt the less I could dissociate them. I found the link with all these different conditions, but diving into autoimmunity can be scary and overwhelming. Most people feel lost in front of so much information. With autoimmunity and brain health, we are dealing with mental health, fatigue and pain, motor issues, gut dysfunction, toxicities and allergies. It’s a minefield. My wish is to help people find their own way and the ‘one thing’ they can start with, while being listened to and supported.

How has becoming a PreKure Certified Health Coach impacted your life?

PreKure has been absolutely life-changing for me. I was in a massive reflection around my own health and my own life. I needed a change, not only in my lifestyle, but also in my career. I joined the first PreKure challenge during one of the lockdowns last year and I felt completely aligned with their beliefs. I then enrolled in the Health Science Certificate, which gave me the answers I was looking for. I finally understood how amazing and capable of healing the human body is. I also soon realised that knowing is not all, as I tried to share this knowledge with my brother, who also has Multiple Sclerosis, with no success.

At my own pace, I upgraded to the Health Coach Certificate to learn how to give and help others. And, wow, what a change! As an extremely shy and hypersensitive introvert, I went out of my comfort zone and learnt all the techniques to reach others’ heart and empower them. The labs are fabulous for this. Not only did PreKure give me a new purpose and meaning in life, but I also developed new friendships and I feel part of a big family. I am completely equipped with the right tools and knowledge to support others in their own health journey. PreKure is also a great support network. You never feel alone with them.

Would you like to share any client success stories or a big ‘aha’ moment in your coaching career?

What brings me joy in my coaching practice is to see people leaving me with a smile and the sense that they’re in control of their next choices. My clients leave my sessions with some simple, step-by-step, doable and logical tips and tools.

Autoimmunity and brain health can be very overwhelming and there is so much to consider. I love to find their own “aha” moment and hear them saying “Oh yes, that’s where and how I can start”, then everything else follows.

On a more personal note, I saw the massive changes in both myself with Multiple Sclerosis and my husband with ADD – improved sleep, more focus, no more mood swing, improved resilience, lots of energy. I could go on and on. A healthy lifestyle can affect so many different areas in life, I just love to hear those type of wins, big or small, from my clients too.

If you are thinking about it, you are already there. And you are there for a reason.

What advice do you have for others thinking about starting their study journey with PreKure?

My main advice will be to trust your gut. If you are thinking about it, you are already there. And you are there for a reason. Whether it is for your own health, to support someone special or to help more people, your “why” will give you the answer. PreKure is an extremely supporting team and has many options for you to go at your own pace. They are listening to your needs, challenges, or struggles. They will always find a way for you to go forward and find what is right for you.
