What is the scope of practice of a Mental Health Coach?

Mental Health Coaches are a new breed of health professional. In this course we provide extensive training on the role of a Mental Health Coach with particular emphasis on the scope of practice. A Mental Health Coach does not diagnose mental ill-health, prescribe medications or specific condition-related treatments. The Mental Health Coach focuses on the present and the future and supports the client or patient to take action and work towards a higher level of functioning.

Please note, that to become a PREKURE Certified Mental Health Coach, you need to complete Health Coaching Training along with the Advanced Certificate of Mental Health.

If I do this Advanced Certificate, will I be at the same level as a Registered Psychologist?

Absolutely not. Training to be a clinical and/or Registered Psychologist takes 7 years. Clinical Psychologists are trained to be able to diagnose and treat all forms of mental ill health including moderate to severe conditions. They are registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board and have a current Annual Practising Certificate.

What is the difference between a HIP (Health Improvement Practitioner) and a Mental Health Coach?

HIPs are currently funded and employed in the primary healthcare sector in New Zealand. To become a health improvement practitioner, you’ll have a degree in public health, a related subject or equivalent health improvement knowledge from training, extended courses and experience. The role of a HIP and Mental Health Coach is very similar. Mental Health Coaches may also work outside of a primary care setting in private practise and within corporate settings.
