Start building your toolbox to help a friend, family member, or work colleague. Learn the foundations of mental health practice in our Mental Health Toolbox short course.

PREKURE’s vision is to put prevention at the heart of mental healthcare. To prescribe lifestyle medicine, behavioural therapy and prevention. Not pills.

It is estimated that one in ten globally, and one in five in most Western countries, suffer from some form of mental health disorder. Yet for many, the public health system offers little help. How is it possible that at a time in human history when we have more wealth, more knowledge and more tools than ever before, we are failing to meet the needs of so many people?

We built this course for people who want to be equipped to support a loved one, friend or co-worker who is struggling to be mentally well. The course is designed for anyone to be able to do and you don’t need any background in health. You might be a parent, grandparent, co-worker, employee wellbeing advisor, teacher or caregiver looking for practical solutions to help. Right here and right now.

Study online, at home, any time.

All our courses are accessed from the convenience of your computer, smartphone or tablet, all from the comfort of your own home.

Be free to learn on your own time, at your own pace, and in your own space.

Module 1: An overview of Stress, Anxiety and Depression

The topics of stress, anxiety and depression are often conflated. It is important to distinguish between these to understand if the person we intend to help is experiencing general life stressors or if it is something more. This module aims to provide an overview of these common issues in mental health and give us a greater understanding of what we can do to help.

Module 2: The Biology of Mental Wellbeing

Now we have an understanding of what stress, depression and anxiety are, it’s time to delve into the inner workings of our brain. Join Professor Grant Schofield as he looks at how the hormones serotonin and glutamate help us function. If you remember back to your high school biology class, hormones are important as they ‘tell us what to do’, they are like little messengers. But what happens when things go awry? Join Professor Grant Schofield to find out out.

Module 3: Mental Health First Aid

Over the last century, we have trialled, learnt and implemented treatments to aid our physical health. Such as when we break a bone and we go to the hospital for treatment. We know this injury won’t heal overnight, but the appropriate first aid has been used to prevent further damage and begin the healing process which will take several weeks. Unfortunately, our systems and treatment for mental health aren’t nearly as developed. There is simply less attention and options for those with urgent mental health issues and the options we do have are often hard to find.

Module 4: The Coach Approach to Mental Health

This course equips you with a toolbox of skills and techniques to dip into when appropriate.

This module looks at a ‘coach approach’ to mental health. We believe good coaching is very powerful and is a great way to help an individual create a better future for themselves and their mental wellbeing.

Module 5: Lifestyle Medicine for Mental Health

In this module you’ll learn:

  • Nutrition for mental wellbeing
  • Micronutrients and mental wellbeing
  • Physical activity, exercise and fitness for mental wellbeing
  • Sleep for mental wellbeing
  • Breathing for mental wellbeing
  • The science of cold water immersion
  • Connection with others
Module 6: ACT-Behaviour Therapy that works

This module introduces ACT behavioural therapy tools and psychological flexibility. Please be aware that this is simply an introduction to this powerful therapy and by completing this module you will not be a trained ACT therapist.
