Module 1: What is physical activity and exercise?

What are the components of fitness? Learn about different physical activity domains and why physical activity helps the body be better.

We look at the difference between physical activity, fitness, exercise, and sedentary behaviour. We also introduce you to the physical activity guidelines and the evidence behind fitness, health and longevity.

Module 2: Exercise physiology

Find out more about the mismatch between human evolutionary legacy and modern-day living. How can these genetic traits be optimised in the modern context?

We look at how the human body works and why we have evolved to move, and explore training zones and what energy systems are in play.

Module 3: Exercise and chronic disease

Learn more about why physical activity helps prevent disease in terms of reducing cardio-metabolic syndrome risk factors. We’ll also look into why physical activity helps manage and reverse some chronic conditions.

Module 4: Exercise prescription I

In this module we dig deeper into different exercise settings, and what the benefits and disadvantages may be. You’ll learn about the basic components to consider in exercise prescription including in general practice (primary care), the fitness industry (gyms, personal trainers) and events.

Module 5: Exercise prescription II

Find out how the latest science and practice come together in fitness testing – how do you measure someone’s fitness level and how can you help them improve?

Module 6: Applied sport nutrition

In this module we explore the fuel/nutrition and health implications of metabolic flexibility.

We take a closer look at the ketogenic diet and why it may have some possible benefits for athletes and other highly active people. We then investigate how eating different mixes of carbohydrates, protein and fat may affect health and sporting performance.

When does the course start and finish?

This course is available for you to start immediately as soon as you enrol with online, 24/7 access. You then have 12 months to complete your short course.
