Module 1: Stress and resilience

This module explores how stress is perceived by the body. You’ll understand the role of the autonomic nervous system in the stress response, the difference between the SNS and PNS and the role cortisol plays in the body. We’ll also delve into hormesis, antifragility and post-traumatic growth and explore the body’s magnificent ability to do more than just ‘bounce back’ from challenges but actually become better and stronger.

Module 2: Mental illness and treatment

In this module you’ll learn about the aetiology of anxiety and depression and understand how mild to moderate mental illnesses can impact one’s life. We’ll also explore more serious mental health disorders such as psychosis and bipolar disorder. You’ll learn about different approaches and treatment options (both conventional and emerging lifestyle tools) and the importance of referring patients on to the right health professionals if need be.

Module 3: Mindfulness, mindset and positive psychology

Module 3 delves into mindfulness, mindset and positive psychology tools. What is the biology behind meditation and mindfulness? We’ll explore mindset and how it impacts on our health, stress, learning, and performance. You’ll also learn about positive psychology and how it can be used in a clinical setting to help patients with health goals. We finish off by briefly examining a series of lifestyle tools.

Module 4: Brain health and the ageing brain

In Module 4, we explore brain health and why it is important for our wellbeing. You’ll learn about the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia and mild cognitive impairment, as well as identify lifestyle factors known to impact on risks of cognitive decline and dementia.

Module 5: Sleep

In the last module, you’ll learn about how much sleep people need and how much we actually get. You’ll understand the biology of sleep including the circadian and ultradian rhythms, and how melatonin works. We’ll also look into common sleep disorders and how they would normally be treated.
