We put 10 of the most common nutrition questions to Prof Grant Schofield and Dr Caryn Zinn. Here’s question 4: Should people avoid dairy products?

If you struggle with eating dairy products – if you have some kind of gut-related negative symptom from eating dairy, whether it’s feeling bloated or getting a weird feeling in the back of your throat or asthma or eczema, and dairy doesn’t sit well with you – it’s safe to say that you should avoid dairy.

If you don’t have a problem eating dairy, if it sits well with you, then by all means it can form a very important part of a healthy diet, because it’s full of protein and calcium and other awesome things.

If you are lactose intolerance, you will know that having a glass of milk, or something with lactose in it, will result in bloating and gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhoea.

Lactose is the sugar, the carbohydrate, found in dairy products. A cup of milk has about 10 grams of carbohydrate, and that’s predominantly lactose. Whereas, if you have cheese or butter or other dairy products that are mostly protein and fat – for cheese – and mostly fat – for butter – there is little, if any, lactose in there.

So bottom-line, if you have a lactose issue – avoid dairy. If you don’t – no problem.
