Meet Sarah Ahern, a Metabolic Health Coach and the proud owner of Metabolic Switch.
What were you doing before you became a Health Coach?
Before venturing into the world of health coaching, I worked as a beauty therapist for 21 years.
What motivated you to become a Health Coach?
My clients were my inspiration. Over the years, I witnessed many of them struggling with health issues, particularly those related to metabolic health. It was disheartening to see young people facing conditions like type 2 diabetes and obesity.
I realised that I wanted to do more than just help my clients feel good about their appearance. I wanted to help them improve their overall health, starting from the inside out. When I discovered the PREKURE Health Coach program, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to align my passion for health and wellbeing with my desire to make a deeper impact on people’s lives.
What are you doing now, since graduating as a Metabolic Health Coach?
I am now the proud owner of my own business, Metabolic Switch. In my role as a Metabolic Health Coach, I work with clients to help them regain their health, lose weight, and reverse type 2 diabetes through personalised nutrition and lifestyle changes. I’m also a PREKURE Diabetes Coach, and I’m incredibly passionate about reversing pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. It’s my mission to empower individuals to take control of their metabolic health and well-being.
Is there a particular aspect of health coaching that you are especially passionate about?
I’m super passionate about metabolic health. I firmly believe that prevention is the key to long-term health. Taking care of your metabolic health not only prevents conditions like type 2 diabetes but also positively impacts mental health. Educating my clients about nutrition and empowering them to make confident food choices is at the heart of what I do. Additionally, I’ve developed a passion for group coaching – creating supportive communities through my 12-week programs brings me immense joy.
Could you share a specific success story where your coaching has made a significant positive impact on a client’s life?
One of my most inspiring clients is Laine. She embarked on a 6-month journey with me and achieved remarkable results. Laine’s dedication to the program was truly exceptional. She not only made significant changes to her nutrition but also embraced the inner work necessary for transformation.
When Laine first came to me, she was overweight and facing multiple health challenges. She suffered from respiratory issues, sinusitis, and frequent lung infections, and had undergone three surgeries. Laine was on prednisone and monthly antibiotics, used inhalers, and took antihistamines. Her low energy and brain fog made it difficult for her to engage in physical activities with her family.
During our time together, Laine lost an impressive 22kg, and an additional 6kg in the second 12-week round. Her health improved dramatically. She no longer suffered from frequent infections, and she could keep up on family walks, enjoying newfound energy and vitality. Laine’s transformation not only inspired her but also those around her to make positive changes in their lives. I’m proud of her progress, and I believe she’s destined for a bright future as a Health Coach herself.
What challenges have you faced as a health coach?
One of the most significant challenges I encountered was believing in myself when I first started. Transitioning from a 21-year career in beauty therapy to a completely new field was a major leap out of my comfort zone. Imposter syndrome was a frequent hurdle to overcome.
How has your PREKURE training prepared you for the real-world scenarios you encounter as a Health Coach?
The PREKURE training, particularly the coaching labs, has been invaluable in preparing me for real-world scenarios. They gave me the push I needed to get outside my comfort zone. I recognised their importance and knew I needed to embrace them to become an effective Health Coach.
How has being a Health Coach enriched your life personally and professionally?
So much!! The amount of times I’ve been out of my comfort zone in the last few years is more than I ever have! It’s taught me how to rediscover myself. It’s helped me heal my inner critic, or more understand it. I have learnt to push myself beyond what I think I’m capable of. I’ve had opportunities and instead of hiding or saying no, I’ve said YES! Even though I was terrified! I wish I had these skills any years ago. This has been truely an amazing journey of growth personally. And professionally it’s taught me expand outside what I thought I could acheive. I’ve learnt what my strengths are.
What advice would you give others considering a career in health coaching, especially if they are coming from a similar background as yours?
Just do it! Even if it feels scary or outside your comfort zone, take that leap of faith. Pursue your passion and discover a career that fills your days with purpose.
What has it meant to you to be part of the PREKURE community and contribute to the transformation of our healthcare system?
Being part of the PREKURE community has been incredible. The support and care from all the staff, students and graduates has been phenomenal. To be a change-maker and to hopefully make a difference in the future of health is a privilege. I feel so blessed to be part of this community.
